Police baton-Charge Journalists in Karachi

posted Thursday, 22 November 2007
Police severly beat journalists , who had gathered at the Karachi Press Club to hold a protest rally against the curbs on media in Pakistan. They wanted to register protest with the governor of Sind.

But when they tried to march towards governors, police used beat them with batons and tried to stop them from going towards governor's house.

The brute force used by the police in the name of law is outrageous. They should have allowed these journalists to register their protest.

I urge the government to lift curbs on the media. They can initiate libel against the journalists if they publish stories without credible evidence. I know the story aired by the GEO TV about Musharraf's arrest , sent the index of the Karachi Stock down. They should have prosecuted GEO TV for airing this news and punish journalists behind this instead of closing the channel.
