A territorial dispute between South Korea and China is brewing as China's maritime authorities claimed its sovereignty over Ieo Island, a remote reef-islet in the waters between the two neighbors. China's State Oceanic Administration recently ran an article in its official journal claiming the islet, called Suyan Rock in China, belongs to Beijing and South Korea is encroaching on its sovereign right.
The islet lies about 149 kilometers southwest of South Korea's southernmost island of Mara and 245 km away from China's Tongdao Island. South Korea has operated a maritime observation facility and a helicopter landing site on the island since 2001. "Suyan Rock is inseparable land of China and is violated by South Korea," said the article contributed by a senior official of East China Sea maritime authorities.
