Military shake-up in Pakistan
posted Friday, 21 September 2007
In a bid to consolidate position and secure his influence in the army, after his presidential election. General Pervez Musharraf made many appointments and promotions. He promoted Major General Nadeem to the rank of Lieutenant General and made him head of the ISI, is widely known for its responsibilities ranging from internal and external espionage to an oversight of domestic political affairs. He was general’s military secretary in 1999 at the time of coup.
Analysts are predicting that outgoing ISI chief General Kiyani will be his possible successor.
In another important move, Lieutenant General Tariq Majeed, commander of the military’s tenth corps was replaced by newly promoted Lieutenant General Mohsin Kamal. He was Major General in 1999 in Lahore and ordered his troops to seize the family estate of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
In my opinions, they changes were made at the request of Americas. General Kiyani and General Majeed] are reputed to be pro-western . Americans think they will continue to support “Pakistan’s contribution to the war on terror.tags: politics pakistan us musharraf america
