Commentary:Pentagon brass meet secretly with Pakistanis

posted Thursday, 28 August 2008

It has transpired that the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and other senior officials met with Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, chief of staff of the Pakistani Army. No one knows what was discussed in meeting.

Pakistani army spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas told press that these high ranking officials discussed the situation prevailing Afghanistan and Pakistan's tribal area.

Analysts say that that attack on a woman diplomat of the U.S. Peshawar consulate prompted this meeting. They say that US officials are worried over the increasingly deadly attacks against Afghan and Western targets in Afghanistan. They are of the opinion that the US wants Pakistan to take action against the militants in the tribal l region.
The question is : Can Gen Kiyani take unilateral against in the tribal areas? Because the coalition government in Islamabad wants to end the crisis in the tribal through dialogue.
