Americans’ privacy being trampled badly

posted Monday, 6 August 2007

SWIFT erosion of civil liberties is one of the casualties of the Twin-Towers tragedy. The Bush administration has misused the 9/11 episode to deprive American citizens of their proud freedom and liberty.

The United States is the sole super power and enjoys highest level of economic and social prosperity. However, what a pity that its citizens are living under constant threat and fear – both imaginary and real – thanks to the one-eyed policies of the Bush administration that have imperiled peace of its own people and those living in other parts of the world.

First of all, there are reasons to believe that the 9/11 tragedy was engineered to mould public opinion at home and abroad for aggression against some nations and people belonging to a particular faith. Even if it was an Al-Qaeda handiwork in the heart of American homeland, the Bush administration over-reacted in destructing an entire sovereign country — Afghanistan. And it did not stop there and invaded Iraq, which had nothing to do with the incidents of 9/11. Aggression against Iraq proved beyond any doubt that 9/11 was mere an excuse to implement American agenda in different parts of the world. However, the strategy of killing and maiming people throughout the world has created more insecurity for Americans as well as other nations.

Life-style of the American people has undergone a tremendous change as the Bush administration keeps them reminding after regular intervals of ‘immediate and potential’ threats of attacks of different sorts including nuclear bombing. Americans have been made to have sleepless nights for fear of Osama and Al-Zuwaihiri getting access to their homes.

The latest effort of President Bush to get Congressional approval for greater surveillance and eavesdropping is also part of the strategy to concentrate more powers and deprive citizens of their civil liberties on the plea of terrorist attacks. Leaders of public opinion, think tanks and members of the civil society should ponder whether policies of Bush administration have increased security for American people or proved as a curse.
